CPR (HANDS ONLY) + AED

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of heart attack and cardiac arrest.

  • Understand the function of the heart, lungs, and circulation system.

  • Identify risk factors contributing to cardiac arrest and methods of prevention.

  • Perform adult one-rescuer CPR effectively, including chest compressions and ventilations.

  • Operate an AED safely and correctly in accordance with voice prompts and safety guidelines.

  • Understand the importance of early defibrillation and its role in survival outcomes.

  • Respond confidently to emergency situations using the DRSABC action sequence.

  • Apply CPR and AED procedures in special environments or confined spaces.

  • Follow appropriate post-incident procedures after AED usage, including reporting and maintenance.

Course Outline:

Chapter 1 – Cardiac Arrest and You

  • Introduction and local cardiac arrest statistics.

  • Heart, lungs, and circulatory system overview.

  • Risk factors and prevention of heart attacks.

  • Mechanism and symptoms of heart attack and cardiac arrest.

  • Chain of Survival – prevention to recovery.

  • Use of SCDF myResponder mobile application.

 

2.  Chapter 2 – Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Importance of early CPR and maintaining circulation.

  • Adult one-rescuer CPR (DRSABC sequence).

  • Performing chest compressions and ventilations (BVM and hands-only methods).

  • CPR in special circumstances and environments.

3.  Chapter 3 – Automated External Defibrillation (AED)

  • Role and importance of early defibrillation.

  • AED operation principles and safety preparation.

  • Placement of AED electrode pads and defibrillation procedure.

  • Post-incident actions and AED maintenance responsibilities.

  • Retrieval and safe handling of public AEDs.

  • Sample practice scenarios and paediatric defibrillation techniques.

Course Information

Summary:

This course equips participants with essential life-saving skills to respond effectively to cardiac emergencies.

It includes:

  • how to recognise cardiac arrest, perform high-quality Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and the safe and correct use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

  • emphasis on early intervention in the Chain of Survival and the importance of community first response in improving survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest.
