Summary:

  • Caregivers’ priority is often caring for the care recipients first and rarely theirs.

  • As such caregivers tend to neglect their own health and needs while busy attending to the care of their sick family member. The physical and emotional demands in caring can be exhausting. Are you beginning to feel overwhelming, helpless and loss? Do you realize that, if left untreated, such stressful situation may lead to anxiety or depression and even burnt out which may affect your mental health?

  • In this course, learners will become more aware of their emotions and to understand the importance of self-care. At the workshop, guided role plays using real-life situations and case discussions will help participants to become more knowledgeable in self-care and thus maintain good mental health to continue support effective caregiving for your loved ones.  Resources for self-care and strategies to help prevent stress and anxiety will be discussed.

Course Outline:

The role of a family caregiver can be challenging especially when you have not been trained to undertake the role. You will face many new responsibilities. You may feel loss from not knowing what to do. It is not easy to ask for help. You may feel afraid that your request for help might be rejected or that you are imposing on others. You begin to feel unsupported, unappreciated, tired, frustrated and start to wonder…

  • Why am I the ONLY ONE to provide care?

  • Why am I feeling so tired?

  • Who can help me?

  • How do I talk to my other family members to help me?

  • How do I know “I cannot take it anymore!”?

  • What can I do to help myself?

These questions would have helped you become more aware of yourself and find ways to take care of yourself so that you can be healthy and well to continue caring for your loved ones. Thus, the importance of SELF-CARE!

Course Objectives:

At the end of the course, participants would be able to better SELF-CARE by:
