CARING FOR SENIORS WHO ARE AMBULANT (SET A) [CTG]

Course Objectives:

  • To describe the ways to deal with the physical changes in an elderly person 

  • To demonstrate effective communication techniques when communicating with the elderly 

  • To demonstrate infection control practices in a home setting 

  • To demonstrate monitoring and recording of temperature, blood pressure and pulse rate 

  • To describe the actions involved when abnormalities arise 

  • To define the different types of diets for the elderly 

  • To demonstrate safe practices of providing support to maintain ADLs needs of elderly 

  • To demonstrate simple exercises for the elderly 

  • To demonstrate administering of oral medication to the elderly 

  • To explain the causes, effects, and prevention of falls 

  • To describe the actions involved when the elderly falls 

  • To discuss the actions involved during emergencies 

  • To demonstrate basic wound dressing for cut wound

  • Infection Control 

  • Understanding and Monitoring of Vital Signs 

  • Assisting to Serve Oral Medication to Elderly 

  • Basic Skincare 

  • Managing Emergencies 

  • Simple Activities and Exercises for Elderly 

ADL Curricula A:

  • Nutrition and Hydration 

  • Feeding 

  • Toileting 

  • Personal Hygiene, Grooming and Dressing 

  • Transferring, Positioning and Mobility 

  • Falls Prevention

CARE FOR URINARY CATHETER
  • Indications of urinary catheterisation 

  • Draining and changing of urinary drainage bag 

  • Cleaning of catheter tubing and bag 

  • Preventing of catheter-related urinary tract infection 

STOMA CARE
  • Indications of stoma 

  • Care of stoma  

  • Changing of stoma bag 

  • Preventing stoma-related infection 

BED BATH
  • Bed bath to include: 

  • Oral care ​

  • Hair washing 

  • Eyes, ears and toes cleaning 

  • Perineal care 

  • Nail care if necessary 

  • Bed making for bed bounded elderly 

TRANSFERRING, POSITIONING & MOBILITY (WHEELCHAIR)
  • Principles of proper body mechanics 

  • Transferring technique from bed to wheelchair and vice versa using proper body mechanics 

  • Positioning and turning of the elderly in bed and on chair using proper body mechanics 

  • Types of assistive mobility devices 

  • Use of assistive mobility devices 

  • Storage of assistive mobility devices

Summary:

  • This course provides participants with opportunities to develop psychomotor skills to provide basic care for the elderly in a home setting 

  • Note: Set A comprises Core Curricula + ADL Curricula A 

  • Elective modules for specialised care skills are optional
